Tour of the Building of the Hungarian Parliament, 2 October, 2024
On Day 2, after the official conference program ends, we offer an opportunity to visit the Hungarian Parliament Building within the framework of a 45 minute guided tour. The first tour will start at 16:00 and a second tour may follow, should there be enough interest. Registration for this optional program is required now, together with the official registration for the conference.
Positioned on the UNESCO-listed Banks of the Danube, the Hungarian Parliament building is one of the world’s most famous parliament buildings and it is the third largest. Construction of the neo-gothic building started in 1885 under the direction of Hungarian architect Imre Steindl and the building was fully opened in 1904. It was intended to be a national symbol, from its décor, including stainglass windows, sculptures and paintings, to its construction, all carried out by only Hungarian craftsmen, out of local raw materials.
The interior of the Parliament building is also stunning, the entrance via the main staircase is like in a royal palace. It has 691 rooms, its building floor area is 268 by 118 metres and its dome is 96 metres high, to commemorate the Hungarian Kingdom's millennium celebrations of 1896. The ancient Hungarian crown jewels, which are among the oldest ones in Europe, are exhibited beneath the dome.
